DVC PRO Cassette repair and recovery

Panasonic DVCPRO 25 Tape 66 minutes
DVC PRO Cassette

Panasonic DVC PRO first introduced in the mid 90’s was a professional digital tape format used in electronic news gathering and other broadcast applications. Although a very robust format, being tape based, it faces the same issues that all tape formats face.

Temperature and humidity are the two most important factors in ensuring tape longevity. Tapes stored in cold, damp conditions are sure to develop mold and other issues related to incorrect storage.

Recently we had a case where a number of DVC PRO 25 tapes had been damaged by mold and moisture. The customer had taken to the tapes to a transfer house in New Zealand, the tapes where not treated prior to being inserted into the VTR’s. This resulted in the tapes snapping and being damaged. The transfer house in question returned the tapes to the customer as being “unrecoverable”

Tape recovery

It is critically important to treat and clean mold damaged tapes prior to them being loaded into VTR’s.

We have perfected various techniques to treat and recover magnetic tape. In the case of the damaged DVCPRO tapes, we opened the cassettes and baked the reels at a constant temperature and humidity level over a prolonged period of time. The baking process extracts residual moisture and helps to release the bonds created by the mold between the layers of tape. We then manually wound every inch of tape onto new take up reels and reassembled the casings.

The result – we managed to recover over 99% of the “unrecoverable” tapes.

Although some sections were lost, it was fortunate that these sections were of little significance. This meant no important material was lost.

Above is a typical example of a damaged section of tape. Moisture causes mold to gather between the tape layers. Because of this, the layers of tape to stick together and if not treated properly will cause the tape to snap during playback.

Transfer to digital files

Using two different VTR’s and our digital video capture system, we were able to digitise the material and supply the customer with uncompressed MOV and compressed MP4 files.

Video 8 tape cleaning and recovery

In most cases a tape like this would go straight to the bin.

Not with us – we successfully recovered every inch of this tape.

This tape was treated using various methods we’ve developed over many years of doing this work.
So how did we do it without giving too much away – we baked the tape for an extended period of time at a constant temperature and humidity level before embarking on the pain staking process of hand cleaning and winding through our custom cleaning jigs.
The result – 100% recovery of all video content from the tape, and yes it was recorded end to end 92 minutes long.
If you have tapes that look like this, chances are they are recoverable despite what you may have been told by others.

DVD Conversions Limited specialize in all video format transfers and offer a cassette clean and recovery service for tapes we are converting.

Tape cleaning

Tape cleaning

A brief insight into our tape cleaning process.

Close up of mouldy VHS tape

Video cassettes are prone to developing mold if not stored correctly. Moisture is video tape’s number 1 enemy. If you have cassettes that look something like this, it’s time to act quick and get them transferred to DVD or digital files.

A badly damaged 8mm video tape.

After baking and cleaning we managed to recover everything from the tape.

Hi8 tape prior to cleaning

VHS Tape is a lot more forgiving than 8mm video or Mini DV. The relative tape thickness is the difference. Once mold has developed on the edges of the tape it soon makes it’s way between the layers of tape which results in the layers sticking together. The edges of the tape also stick together and cause the tape to shred into pieces. So, what’s the fix for this problem. VHS cassette cleaners where available in the day, however, their success rate was less than desirable as the mold was removed from the tape but for the most part remained in the casing. A more intense cleaning method is required to remove dirt and mold from the tape and cassette casing.

Tape cleaning method

Our methods involve opening the cassette and removing the take up or supply reel and manually winding the tape under tension to gently unwind each layer. Soft cleaning pads gently remove excess mold and dirt. We then clean the inside of the casing and reassemble. We do not use any solvents or chemicals in our cleaning process, we use a dry cleaning technique.

Tape baking

In severe cases we bake the cassette under constant temperature and humidity levels, removing excess moisture. Damaged sections of the tape are removed and the tape spliced. Magnetic tape can be spliced contrary to popular belief, provided you use the correct splicing films.

Success rates

Our success rate across all formats is in excess of 95%. In the worst cases some tape may be lost. We do our best to recover as much as possible.

We’ve recovered video footage from damaged tapes such as

  • VHS / VHSC / SVHS
  • Betamax
  • Video 8 / Hi8 / Digital 8
  • Betacam
  • Umatic
  • DV
  • DVCPRO
  • Audio cassette
  • DAT – Digital Audio Tape

Some tips on tape storage.

  • Store upright, on the short or long edge of the tape.
  • Always rewind the tapes.
  • Always keep the cassette in it’s protective case. If you don’t have cases, use a paper envelope.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Store with silica gel sachets to remove moisture.
